About The Whitby Sixth Form
Welcome to The Whitby High School Sixth Form
We are delighted to welcome you to the Sixth Form at The Whitby High School — a vibrant, ambitious, and supportive community where students are encouraged to reach their full potential both academically and personally.
Our Sixth Form offers a dynamic environment tailored to the needs of young adults preparing for the next exciting stage of their lives. Whether your aim is to attend university, start an apprenticeship, or step into the world of work, we provide the opportunities, guidance, and resources to help you succeed.
At The Whitby High School Sixth Form, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive atmosphere where every student feels valued. Our experienced staff are committed to delivering high-quality teaching across a broad range of academic and vocational subjects. We also provide a strong pastoral support system, ensuring that all students feel confident and well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

Facilities
The LunchBox is the Sixth Form dining area and social space, and it is for their exclusive use. There is a hot food offer available throughout the school day. Hot and cold drinks and snacks are also popular choices for the students and there is new seating for September 2025.
Upgraded WiFi coverage is also on offer for the students in The LunchBox.
The Sixth Form Study Centre is our flagship facility and was newly completed in April 2025. The study centre has been professionally designed to enhance the learning experience of our students and to support them to become independent learners. To that end, students can borrow laptops on request and work in a variety of spaces to suit their needs or they take advantage of the fixed desktop PCs if that suits their way of working better.
In the study centre, students will attend their guided learning sessions, complete independent study tasks and access pastoral support if required.
Also in the study centre is a ‘common room’ that the students can use to relax and chat with their friends. All the desks and seating have power sockets and USB chargers and high-speed WiFi is provided throughout.
Dress Code
Students attending Sixth Form are permitted to wear casual dress. We ask students to be modest, avoid clothing that could cause offence and to dress in a way that is suitable for the various settings in which they may be working.
Where members of the Sixth Form are judged to be dressed inappropriately, they may be asked by one of the Sixth Form team to amend their dress either that day or in future. In all such circumstances, the judgment of The Head of Sixth Form or Headteacher is final.
Phone Policy
Sixth Form students are allowed to bring their phones to school and use them freely in The Lunchbox and the Common Room. However, to support their learning and avoid distractions, students are not permitted to use their phones in the Sixth Form Study Centre. As the main school is ‘phone free’, Sixth Form students are further asked not to have their phones, earbuds or headphones in view around the school.
Students are also not permitted to use their phones during their lessons.
Enrichment
Life in the Sixth Form is about more than just study. Our students have access to a wide range of enrichment opportunities, from leadership roles and community involvement to sports, clubs, and work experience. These activities help to develop valuable life skills such as communication, teamwork, and resilience — qualities that are vital in any future career path.

Whitby+
Encouraging students to aim high and to aspire to be the best that they can possibly be, is part of the day to-day work here at The Whitby. Whitby+ is our commitment to every student in the Sixth Form to enable them and encourage them to achieve their ambitions and move on to the next stage of their lives successfully. Whitby+ is a key part of our 6th Form Personal Development PACE Programme which builds character in our students and helps them to stand out from the crowd.
This programme will look different for each individual student and will be tailored to their individual needs and aspirations. The programme will include.
- High-quality careers advice from an external adviser
- One-week of work experience which the students will source and self-place with guidance and support in school
- Support for students looking for pathways into employment and apprenticeship through our employment readiness programme.
- Specific mentoring and coaching with local high-profile businesses, such as Airbus and Bank of America
- Support through UCAS applications which includes those students who aspire to follow medicine, dentistry or applications to Russell Group Universities including Oxford and Cambridge through our work with Zero Gravity.
- Frequent extra-curricular activities and experiences such as campus visits, careers fairs and networking events.
- All students in 6th Form, can participate in a Camps International Expedition, which develops those key life skills vital to their future success.
- All students in 6th Form are expected to participate in PACE Pledges at silver and gold level. This includes opportunities to challenge their leadership skills by becoming Head Students and Subject Ambassadors.
Working in collaboration with leading universities, education partners, apprenticeship providers and local employers, we aim to provide a package of support around each student, which is of as high-quality as the teaching experience in their classrooms.
