Media Studies

Curriculum Intent

The Creative iMedia curriculum is designed to equip students with the creative, technical, and analytical skills necessary to thrive in a digital and media-rich world. Across all key stages, the subject offers a progressive journey through which students develop the ability to plan, produce, and evaluate digital content with purpose, professionalism, and creativity.

At KS4, learners engage with industry-relevant briefs through the OCR Cambridge National qualification, deepening their understanding of media production, visual identity, and interactive design. By KS5, students apply and expand this knowledge through advanced study of media theory and practice, critically exploring the social, cultural, and ethical impact of digital media.

  • KS4 Creative iMedia – Key Focus Areas

    • Gain foundational knowledge and practical skills across the media industry.
    • Understand media sectors and a range of job roles (e.g. senior, technical and creative).
    • Learn how media codes and conventions are used to connect with audiences.
    • Explore legislation and compliance in media production (e.g. BBFC, PEGI & CC)
    • Understand digital file types, properties, and formats used in media.
    • Develop visual identities for brands using graphic design principles.
    • Create original digital graphics in response to set briefs.

Key Stage 5

Media at KS5 is an extension to learning taken place in both KS3 and KS4, although, students do not need to have a GCSE or equivalent qualification in order take Media studies at Level 3.

At KS5, students extend and refine their knowledge of pre-production and planning documents, such as health and safety, visualisation diagrams, work plans and call sheets. This knowledge is further embedded through the application of these documents to real life media products, whilst also learning about the conventions and social ‘norms’ within the media industry. Once knowledge and learning has been embedded, students will then apply their knowledge gained throughout the course and create their very own media product.

The course is assessed through a combination of NEA and examined units.
