SUBJECT OVERVIEW

The Whitby High School has a successful and exciting Mathematics Department who continue to improve due to strong leadership, high expectations of pupils and through carefully considered approaches to how we deliver our curriculum for pupils from year 7 to year 13. It is a friendly and happy department which places a focus on pupils’ enjoyment of mathematics and independence of thought.

Our department adopts a Mastery Style teaching approach, encouraging pupils to think logically and collaboratively in order to reach a goal. We focus on the understanding of core topics in order to enable pupils to become more flexible and able to apply skills they have learnt in Maths lessons to later life. We use plenty of manipulatives and pictures in lessons, which help many of our pupils to make good progress even in the more challenging topic areas.

We offer semi-mixed attainment classes at years 7 to 9, which allows pupils to collaborate with each other effectively. We believe that these styles of groups encourage a culture of explanation and questioning that does not always come with groups full of pupils of a similar ability. We find that mixed attainment classes benefit pupils who may have struggled in primary school due to being born almost a year later than others.

Our department has a strong and experienced A-Level teaching team who have consistently given pupils the best chance of gaining excellent results. We offer the recently reformed Edexcel 2 year A Level course which incorporates many areas of Pure Maths together with Mechanics and Statistics. Our pupils are given a login to the extremely popular Activlearn interactive service from Edexcel which allows them to access the course material wherever they go. We use state of the art graphical calculators during lessons and exams, allowing pupils to solve complicated equations more easily.

Intervention is a major theme in our department which occurs after every major test with every year group. We believe that tests are only a tool allowing us to ascertain weaknesses or misconceptions held by pupils and that the most important part of a test is what you do after it. We group together pupils with similar misconceptions after each test; these pupils have a chance to retry those topics, often in a different way, so that they do not have to move on to other topics whilst still being unsure about some of the content included in the test.

Our members of teaching staff continue to develop professionally and are encouraged by the school to attend many sessions and lectures in order to be able to keep up to date with the current best practice in the teaching of mathematics. Members of our department are involved in various local Maths Hubs run by Edexcel as well as national groups such as PiXL and NCETM. We believe that teaching is not an exact science and that each pupil is different. We find that having well trained and motivated staff enables us to get the most out of the differences that pupils have.

The Whitby High School is committed to delivering as easy a transition from Primary school to high school as possible. Members of our department frequently visit local primary schools to deliver lessons and workshops in order to help nervous pupils to feel that little bit more positive about the high school experience. We offer open evenings and encourage all prospective pupils and parents/carers to attend, this way they get to see that our department is not a scary place, but one with a positive ethos and fun attitude.

We believe that opportunities for our most gifted and talented mathematicians are an important part of our department. We offer visits to local universities as well as the chance to participate in the extremely prestigious UKMT challenge. Furthermore, we deliver sessions aimed at gifted and talented year 8 pupils on an extra-curricular basis.
