EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

An important part of Physical Education at The Whitby High School is the massive extra-curricular programme. A wide range of competitive and recreational clubs is on offer to students, five days a week after school.

The school is one of the leading providers of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme in Cheshire. With the help of the PE department, students are able to  participate in the DofE Bronze, Silver and Gold awards

The PE department also run a number of school trips throughout the year, including an annual ski trip to Italy.   Annual charity events are also organised by the PE department with pupils raising money for great causes by completing a Sports Relief Mile and The Wirral Coastal Walk

KEY STAGE 3

The Physical Education department provides Year 7 students with two hours of PE per week and three hours per week in Year 8 and 9.  Autumn/Winter sports on offer to Key Stage 3 students include volleyball, cross-country, football, rugby, dance, netball, gymnastics and basketball. The summer activities include athletics, tennis, softball and rounders.

The department believes that competition is an important learning experience and it holds four sets of House competitions, in which ALL students take part.  In the autumn term, there are rugby, netball and cross-country house competitions. During the Easter term there are football and tag rugby events.  At the end of the summer term, as well as House rounders and softball competitions,  there is also a Sports Day.

KEY STAGE 4

Pupils continue to take part in core PE in Year 10 and 11 where additional activities are on offer, which include table tennis, badminton, trampolining and dodgeball.

Current Year 10 and 11 students are also provided with the option to choose PE or Dance as one of their examination subjects.   PE students study the BTEC First Award in Sport and Dance students study the GCSE syllabus.

Alongside developing their sport specific skills and improving their fitness, pupils develop a range of inter-personal skills. Teamwork, problem solving, leadership and communication skills are encouraged throughout the pupils time in Physical Education. Students are given the opportunity to develop these skills through leading warm-ups, competing as part of a team and undertaking the role of a coach and official.
