SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Music is a unique form of communication that can change the way students feel, think and act. It can develop students’ competence as learners and increase their self-esteem and emotional development.

ACTIVITIES OF THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT

We aim to widen the experience of music as an aesthetic, social, practical and enjoyable discipline for all the students. We aim to make music as inclusive as possible providing activities for all kinds of musician – Classical, pop or music technologists

The music department offers a wide range of courses across all Key Stages, giving students the opportunity to develop playing skills, performing skills and an appreciation of music.   We offer BTEC music at Key Stage 3 and 4 and A level music technology at Key Stage 5.  We have a great tradition of our musicians going on to study music and making a career out of it.

We use Music Technology throughout the music lessons. This includes music software - Cubase 7, Fruity Loops, The Dums and access to high quality Music Technology support forums.

Instrument tuition - we offer vocal, piano, woodwind, guitar, drums, brass and string lessons for any student who wants to learn an instrument and take their music to the next level – for more information contact the Music Department.

We have practice rooms available for use in the lessons for group work and for individual music tuition.  Two computer suites, a keyboard suite and recording studio are always in use, support our teaching and enrich the students’ learning.

Our well-equipped recording studio (Studio B@WHS) is a great facility to record  quality tracks for examination course work and for pleasure. Some of our students have recorded musicians/teachers producing high quality demos for websites and promotional material.

There are many opportunities to perform in concerts and shows as well as be part of the back stage and technical crew. Recent shows include Grease, Hairspray, Our House, The Wiz, The Little Shop Of Horrors and We Will Rock You.

Students are encouraged to organise their own events including: concerts, Battle of the Bands and fundraising events and taking part in gigs and competitions outside of school

We aim to do an annual foreign music tour during which we perform concerts at wonderful venues and explore places of interest. Tours have included Spain, Italy and Switzerland.  Other music trips include visits to see live events, pantomime or a musical and we have had professional musicians into school to perform and talk to the students.
