The Modern Foreign Languages Department offers lively, up to date courses at all Key Stages. We use current resources and aim to maintain a high percentage of target language in our lessons. Pupils are expected to participate fully in lessons and make contributions in French or German. A recent Ofsted inspection report wrote that ‘’MFL is a thriving hub of good teaching’’.
KEY STAGE 3
In Year 7 German, students learn how to make introductory conversations and give information about themselves. They learn how to present details about their school, hobbies, family and home town.
In Year 8 German, students learn how to discuss past holidays and give opinions about TV and films. They learn how to conduct transactions in town, how to lead a healthy life and how to express what illness they have.
In Year 9 German, students learn how to present information about their use of technology and media. They learn how to express their plans for the future. They compare school life here and in a in a German speaking country. They also learn how to discuss the environment in German.
In Year 7 French, students learn how to introduce themselves and talk about home and school life. They learn to talk about leisure activities and food and drink.
In Year 8 French, students describe towns and learn directions. They talk about clothes and the weather, holidays and sport.
In Year 9 French, students describe themselves and talk about technology, they learn about healthy living, future plans and discuss rights and responsibilities.
All students are assessed every half term in at least two skills (listening, speaking, reading , writing and grammar).
