SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Mathematics is a vital asset in many fields; education, economics, research and many other domains generate a great need for well-educated mathematic professionals. Mathematics is not just required of capable scientists but also is related inherently in many parts of day to day life.

Dean Schlicter wrote “Dig down deeply enough into anything and you will find mathematics” – A good real life example is to think about the preparation of a meal. If you are cooking a meal for your family, you could use financial mathematics to budget for the cost of the meal. You then use your knowledge of weights, measures and timing to cook the food. Even at a basic level it is amazing to think how Mathematics affects our everyday lives often without us even knowing it.

Good Mathematicians are in high demand even in fields that have little to do with maths. Employers value traits that are acquired through a study of mathematics, including logical and abstract thinking, creativity, and flexibility. For good mathematicians, career possibilities are excellent.

The teaching of Mathematics is evolving all the time. The Mathematics Department at The Whitby High School is heavily involved in extending the use of technology in its teaching. We make liberal use of data projectors, interactive whiteboards and a wide range of mathematics software. Teachers employ a variety of teaching methods, from the traditional (e.g. exercise work) to the innovative (such as use of manipulatives to model situations, Quizdom devices and mathematical relays).

KEY STAGE 3

At Key Stage 3 students experience a wide range of mathematics. They have the opportunity to use and apply their skills in a range of everyday situations. Our long-established Maths Club allows pupils to do unusual and interesting things that they would not otherwise see in their lessons. All students are assessed at the end of every half term.

YEAR 8

KEY STAGE 4

Key Stage 4 begins in Year 9 and is run over 3 years. It  is all about preparation for GCSE exams and life beyond. GCSE Maths will always be an extremely important qualification to have, whether pupils study Mathematics at A level or leave school for college, apprenticeship or employment.

The Pearson Edexcel GCSE Maths course prepares the students to help achieve the best GCSE grade possible. The qualification consists of three equally-weighted written examination papers at either Foundation tier or Higher tier. Paper 1 is a non-calculator assessment and a calculator is allowed for Paper 2 and Paper 3.

The assessments will cover:

We also offer Edexcel GCSE Statistics in which students have the opportunity to investigate concepts through the use of data analysis.

KEY STAGE 5

Good mathematicians are in short supply in commerce and industry. Research shows that people with degrees in the mathematical sciences earn a significantly higher wage than other graduates. The Mathematics Department at Whitby offers an excellent mathematics education that provides the knowledge, skills and understanding that a student needs in order to proceed to employment or to further study.

In Key Stage 5, we currently follow the Edexcel  A  level course, which includes modules in Core Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics.

Topics covered include:

CORE MATHS

STATISTICS

MECHANICS
