ETHICS & PHILOSOPHY

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Ethics and Philosophy is an important and valued subject at The Whitby High School. It provides students with an opportunity to encounter challenging ethical questions, explore religious and secular responses, and develop their own thoughts and ideas on these controversial issues.

KEY STAGE 3

In Year 7, pupils begin learning about the origin of the 6 world religions. Once this basis of knowledge is developed we adopt a thematic approach to our study.  The 2 thematic units are 'Journey of life', which explores milestones in our lives, and 'Compassion and stewardship' which examines how we look after the planet.

In Year 8, pupils learn about Islam in the modern world. The following units are thematic; 'Suffering' which includes a study of the Holocaust and 'Searching for meaning and purpose'.

In Year 9, pupils continue with a thematic approach to their study of Ethics and Philosophy. The units are called 'Matters of life and death'; 'Contemporary moral issues' and 'Peace and conflict'.

Pupils are assessed through extended pieces of writing which are generally completed in class and an end of year test.

KEY STAGE 4

At Key Stage 4 students undertake AQA GCSE Religious Studies (Specification A). The AQA website states that students who take the qualification, ‘will learn how religion, philosophy and ethics form the basis of our culture, and develop valuable skills that will help prepare them for further study.’ As part of the GCSE students study the contrast between Christianity and Judaism.

Students will also study broader questions such as, ‘Does God exist?’, ‘Should we allow capital punishment?’ and ‘What makes a just war?’

Students are assessed by two written examinations lasting 1hr 45mins. In lessons, students are assessed by completing frequent exam questions under timed conditions.
